Robotic voices, though some are mechanical or digital sounding, are made by people! Just think of your favorite robots from the past. Some are human-sounding while others are undeniably robotic.
What do robot voices sound like?
There are many robot characters who take on different roles and have different personalities in the media. Robots could sound more synthetic or human, friendly or hostile, helpful or rebellious. Many robot voices go through filters to sound more mechanical, however, if the goal is an android or cyborg, the robot may sound more human-like and the speech is more smooth than choppy. The robot’s voice depends heavily on the mechanics of the robot and the intentions of the writer in the portrayal of the robot.
The character of the robot also depends on the writing of the robot. The robot could be a helpful droid, like C-3PO, a translator droid, or R2-D2, an astromech droid, from Star Wars. The robots could be evil, like the Terminator from The Terminator, or AUTO from WALL-E.
Some robots are quite intelligent and logical, others are programmed or need to learn, being more infantile in their speech. A logical robot with a specific goal would be less emotional and more stoic, while a learning robot, or an AI, may try to learn human emotions and express them.

The robots we encounter are synthetic but also designed to be more human for their interactions with humans. These robots include digital voice assistants like Apple’s Siri, Google’s Google Assistant, Cortana or Alexa. Other robots that serve people are the GPS and telephone system voices, as well as the voices in various text-to-speech services. These voices, however, may not be the most accurate in pronunciation or emotion, and robot voices are usually done best by human actors.
