POCHOLO GONZALES: The Face That Launched a Thousand Voices

The VOICE – the most powerful instrument of humankind. It is the only instrument that can start a war or say “I love you.” While other sounds may be louder, only the human voice has the power to convey messages that could move, shape or shake the world.

Many people use their voice for their profession. Others use it to carry out their advocacy, still others for their hobbies. Then there’s the rare kind who use their voice to fulfill their calling, and to provide opportunities for others to do the same, particularly the youth.

Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” Gonzales – veteran voice artist, experienced radio broadcaster, internationally-awarded youth advocate, author, and highly sought-after voice coach, trainer and motivational speaker. For 20 years, he has used his voice not just to bring characters to life, but more importantly, to inspire, motivate and empower the people around him.

Pocholo started his voice acting career at the age of 16 after winning a radio drama and singing contest in DZMM, in the year 1996. Shortly after, he entered the world of voiceovers in various networks and production houses, until he established his own voiceover services company, Creativoices Productions, in 2005. Through Creativoices, he also created the very first voice acting school, the Philippine Center for Voice Acting, to give aspiring voice artists a chance to get their foot in the door of a rather elusive industry. By then, Pocholo has also began his career as a trainer and motivational speaker, speaking in various schools and organizations on topics such as voice acting, communication, personal branding, Guerilla Marketing, and youth empower and development.

A Heart for Serving the Youth

With his natural desire to serve young people, Pocholo ran for the Sangguniang Kabataan in his hometown in Mariveles, Bataan, in which he lost. This lost opportunity turned out to be one of his biggest gains, as it was shortly followed by his move to Manila to study BA Speech Communication in the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and of course, to join the competition in DZMM. His stint as one of the hosts, scriptwriters and co-directors of “Barkadahan sa Radyo” became his chance to lead a group of young radio drama talents in the program. And as if a stroke of genius, the idea to create his own volunteer youth organization came to life.

Pocholo founded Voice of the Youth Network (VOTY) in 1996 – a volunteer youth organization that aims to encourage every Filipino youth to believe in their capacity for creating positive social change. Its mission is to inform, inspire, involve and empower the youth through media and ICT.

Pocholo has high respect and admiration for Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, who is known for his belief that the youth is the hope of the nation. Pocholo, however, wanted to take the principle to a higher level and believe that young people are the REALIZATION of the hope for a better nation. With this in mind, he envisioned VOTY as the venue where young people can come together to speak about issues that affect them, and to express their skills and talents – on air, off air and online.
In the year 2000, when he was 20 years old, Pocholo had the rare opportunity to travel around Southeast Asia as a Philippine delegate to the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP). This opened his mind to the countless opportunities awaiting young people, both here and abroad. SSEAYP ignited Pocholo’s desire to reach out to the youth all over the country through the use of broadcast and social media.

Giving the Youth a Voice

Through his established reputation and relationships in radio, Pocholo was able to reach out to various networks to share his vision for VOTY, and to produce youth-oriented radio programs for free. In 2004, the first VOTY-produced radio program aired at DZME 1530 kHz, called “Lakas Kabataan, Tinig Kabataan.” The program aired for a couple of years, until it was re-branded as “Voice of the Youth Radio” in 2006. VOTY also had its TV show, Voice of the Youth TV, which aired in Global News Network (GNN) in 2008. In 2013, Voice of the Youth Radio moved to its new home in Radyo Inquirer DZIQ 990AM. In a span of 2 years, it was followed by a series of radio shows in many other radio stations:

‐ Tinig Kabataan, DWDD 1134
‐ Voice of the Children, DWDD 1134
‐ Kabataan On Air, DWDD 1134
‐ Radio Kabataan, DZAR 1026
‐ Youth Power Radio, DZME 1530
‐ Generation Y and Z Radio, DZIQ 990
‐ School of Life Radio, DZIQ 990
‐ Radyo Kabataan, DZXL 558

Through his motivational talks all over the country, Pocholo was able to grow VOTY by inspiring thousands of young people to act on their dreams and express themselves in a positive way. To date, VOTY has over 100,000 members and 20 radio programs all over the Philippines, with active chapters in provinces like Sorsogon, General Santos, Tacloban, Bataan, Iloilo, and many more.

Pocholo’s efforts in empowering and developing the youth was recognized locally and internationally, having received awards such as:

• Awardee, Youth Ambassador for Peace from Universal Peace Federation and Youth Federation for World Peace, awarded during International Youth Assembly in Cuneta Astrodome, Pasay City on August 2, 2014
• Awardee, Global Youth in Action Award from Global Youth Action Network, awarded in New York City on August 30, 2004
• Awardee, 2nd YouthActionNet Award from International Youth Foundation, awarded aboard Odyssey Cruise on Potomac River, Washington DC on October 12, 2003
• District Winner, 2nd Quezon City Youth Achiever’s Awards (Community Work Category), awarded by the Office of the Vice Mayor of Quezon City on October 8, 2003

The Vision

With his innate passion to teach and pay forward, Pocholo has envisioned the youth to be a powerful army of leaders and nation builders. This is why he is investing much of his time and energy in training the youth to develop their skills and capabilities to become great ASEAN citizens of the 21st century.

Through VOTY, Pocholo has established the VOTY Radio Broadcasting Academy, which aims to train aspiring broadcasters and journalists on real-life, hands-on experience in the various aspects of the industry – radio programming, broadcasting, news and script writing, interviewing, among many others. He aims to partner with local and national radio networks to bring the academy to schools with Mass Communication courses.

Pocholo has also began developing programs such as Youth Entrepreneurship 101, Youth Leaders Camp, and many more.

Pocholo’s ultimate vision is to establish the CREATIVE YOUTH CENTER, where young people get to learn 21st century skills in 21st century context, using 21st century tools. The Creative Youth Center will be the “school of life” for young people, where they will learn life skills that will make them better people, for themselves and the community.
