Wizard Voices

You're a wizard, Harry. Have you written a character with magic powers into your voice over script?

The wizard character is usually a wise, older man, with a lot of knowledge and passion in his craft. Wizards are mystical in nature, and have a veil of secrecy and intrigue to their character.

The wizard is confident and goal driven, usually seeking knowledge or performing a quest. Wizards can be benevolent or malevolent, depending on their alignment with good or evil in a fantasy setting. A benevolent wizard is often compassionate and straightforward in his practices. The malevolent wizard is often cunning, and convincingly lies to trick others.

These types of wizards are seen in Tolkien’s works, with Gandalf being the wise, old, compassionate and dedicated wizard who leads the good factions to victory, and Saruman as the cunning wizard who dabbles in evil for power and wealth.

Another variety of wizard portrayed in Tolkein’s work is the character Radagast, an old, scatter minded and confused, but similarly driven and benevolent wizard. Some wizards fall into that hermit category, more in tune with nature than people, and may sound more awkward and detached. The two general archetypes of older wizards are the socially awkward hermit, and the powerful, wise leader, be it good or evil.

Wizards can also be younger, such as in the Harry Potter series. These wizards are inexperienced students of older wizards, and may be less mature, less knowledgeable, and more irresponsible and carefree with these powers. These wizards do not share discipline, the wisdom or the reverence for the craft that the older wizards do, but they can learn to adopt these traits and become more confident or wise through the course of a script.

Younger wizards, again, think Harry Potter and wizards of similar ilk, are often more optimistic and encouraged, however, ready to try new things and are bright students. When voicing a younger wizard, it is important to make them sound more like a teenager or a young adult than an old, wise man.
